“Sealed with the Spirit"
Ephesians 1:13-14

INTRODUCTION: We receive the Spirit through a spiritual birth. Jesus described the new birth by the Holy Spirit in John 3:1-8. The Holy Spirit regenerates and seals us at the moment of salvation. Paul describes this process in Ephesians 1:13-14: In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory. What is the seal of the Holy Spirit? The seal of the Holy Spirit marks God’s ownership of us and guarantees our security in salvation.

THE HOLY SPIRIT COMPLETES MY SALVATION.

*When I believe Jesus is the Risen Lord and accept his forgiveness (Romans 10:9-10), the Holy Spirit enters my life and marks me as a newborn child of God. In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit (Eph 1:13).

*The Holy Spirit is given to me as a foretaste of the life to come. He is my guarantee or down payment on a future inheritance. The word “arrabon” means “earnest, deposit, pledge.” You ‘were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory” (Eph. 1:14).

*The seal of the Holy Spirit guarantees our salvation. The Holy Spirit’s presence in our lives guarantees our future hope. “And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee” (2 Corinthians 1:21-22).

The Holy Spirit is the down payment and seal of my final redemption.

THE HOLY SPIRIT CONFIRMS MY IDENTITY.

*The seal of the Spirit is God’s mark of ownership on me. I am a child of God.  “For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ”(Romans 8:15-16).

*A seal authenticates and completes a contract. The seal of the Spirit marks the genuineness of my new birth. It is the proof of my identity. My salvation is a done deal. “And I bought the field at Anathoth from Hanamel my cousin, and weighed out the money to him, seventeen shekels of silver. I signed the deed, sealed it, got witnesses, and weighed the money on scales. Then I took the sealed deed of purchase, containing the terms and conditions and the open copy. And I gave the deed of purchase to Baruch… in the presence of Hanamel my cousin, in the presence of the witnesses who signed the deed of purchase” (Jeremiah 32:9-12).

The presence of the Holy Spirit in my life proves I am a child of God.

THE HOLY SPIRIT CONSOLES MY INSECURITY.

*The Holy Spirit gives me assurance of my salvation. God knows me, loves me, and seals me with his inscription. I know who I am and I can rest in peace and contentment in Christ. “But God's firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity” (2 Timothy 2:19).

*The Holy Spirit gives me security in my relationship with God. God sealed us and no one can unseal us. No one can remove his seal. We may grieve the Spirit of God but our eternal salvation is secure. “And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption” (Ephesians 4:30).

I am signed, sealed, and delivered by the Holy Spirit.
